“The
post-modern era has called virtually all of our internal organizing
assumptions, and all of our external organizing institutions
into serious question. The visual artist has played an important
role in this iconoclastic process. Freeing ourselves and our
collective from the oppression of false order and meaning
is not enough, however. We must open ourselves to engage new
myths and metaphors, or our overwhelming need for the safety
of sensibility will cause us to enter a macabre dance of rigid
return to what was, with a frightened fierce denial that it
is indeed dead. As a visual artist, I paint and draw from
the center of my own engaged story with an awareness of its
place in this larger drama of our time.”
